Illustration: Forest Witch

Just to get creative and try to find something to attract more readers who love art to visit my blog. Hence, I share with you guys – my illustration of Forest Witch. The sketch was made 2 years ago and I had been keeping it in a stack folder of Procreate and since I needed to get things done and up ASAP on here, I just took this and colored it digitally. It took me 3 days to finish it and I remembered I sketched this one whole day. Perhaps, this could be used as one of the contents that I put in my vlog. Or maybe there could be another new drawing. But yeah, that I still don’t know yet.

I am proud that I managed to finish this so quickly. Making a webtoon where I usually draw and color 70 panels help me work the illustration faster than I expected. Of course, I bet a pro illustrator could do that in one day. But I’m just a novice. I just need to learn and practice more to get on their level. For now, I can only say it’s a hobby and if the webtoon hires me then I have to put my heart 100% into making lots of this.

Oh, did I tell you I make a webtoon as well? Yes, I am. Right now, I am still busy finishing the second episode of my romance/comedy series. It takes a long, long time to finish; from the original plan that I could do 1 episode per month, it is taking me more than 6 months to finish drawing almost the end of the episode. Most of the time I juggle my time to do some vlog’s editing and also, of course, my real life. What I know, famous webtoonist who update their comic per week (who are making long episode) or 3 posts per week (who are making a comic strip) has some assistants on their back. Me? I’m a one-man show. Things can be a little chaotic if I do all the things at once. That’s why before I get so productive these few weeks I had taken a long break, just to clear my mind and be able to rest. The topic will get deeper, but I for sure will blog about it next time =)

This is a fun question for you guys. WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DRAW NEXT?

Brunei Foods

The part of what I loathe the most when living in a foreign country is when you crave more of your home country’s foods.

I finally uploaded my vlog #20 here. When I see there are still backlog videos that I need to edit for the sake of ‘purging’ them out of my cellphone storage, I realized most of them are all foods. It already sucks that I’m living away from Brunei it even sucks that some of the main ingredients or products I couldn’t even get from any Asian shop here.

For example, if I wanted to make Kuih Kosui, this sweet jiggly pandan taste-like cakes coated with shredded coconut they need to have lime water to make it perfect.

Can I tweak or substitute it?

The answer is yes and no. Yes, if you expect the imperfect taste of it. However, if you are like me, who doesn’t know how to tweak or couldn’t find any substitute for the ingredients or even worst a bad cook, then you’ll know the answer to this is no.

I miss eating…

There are so many I miss about Brunei foods. But I mainly miss eating the traditional wet dessert cakes like Kosui or Malaysian called it Kaswi, Pinyaram, Ardam, Wajid, and Kelupis. Whilst Brunei traditional cuisine that I miss as well are Belutak and Aminah Arif Restaurant’s main dish, Daging Urat Tumis.

The appearance of traditional kuih-muih you can watch in my latest vlog below.

My attempt & What Is Missing

Pinyaram

Glad I still keep this picture with me. Compare to the first picture here and my experiment, straight from the bat you already know something is missing. My Pinyaram tasted tough, but the perfect Pinyaram usually tastes soft and has this crunchy edge frills that roll up after frying and the middle usually raises like a UFO spaceship shape and does not turn up like Dorayaki.

What did I do wrong here? Simply say the substitute ingredient that I thought I could tweak made it a failed attempt. Instead of using gula Anau I used brown sugar. Bear in mind that gula Anau is nowhere to be found here. In order to get it, you have to wait for my husband’s generous colleague who wants to help us to bring it here– that if they want to help. Asking my family to post it via normal mail post is not an option here because it’s not dry food. Even if I ask them to crystallize the sugar so that it’ll turn up like refined sugar I’m not so sure the quality will be good.

My attempt at making Pinyaram.

Ardam

Same as Ardam although it almost looks the same as the perfect one (pardon me there’s no picture of my failed attempt) the texture was very unlikely the same. Mine was hard and not soft and gritty at all.

Selurut, Wajid & Kelupis

I think I can make the filling of these two wet foods. However, I couldn’t find the leaves that wrapped these foods here, because Selurut uses Nypa Palm leaves, which come from a tropical palm tree that is usually found near the mangrove swamp river, and for Kelupis, you gonna need Daun Nyirik (peel leaves).

The only leaves that I saw last time in the Asian shop were just frozen pre-cut banana leaves packed in clear plastic. So without the leaves, it won’t be as fragrance and authentic as the original recipe.

For Wajid, since I used to help my mother make it during Eid Ul Fitr’s eve I can accept that I can eat it without the need to wrap the Wajid with Daun Nyirik. I remember my mother giving me a spoonful of serving size and placing it on the plate for me to taste. To me, the taste was already good so I don’t think I need the leaves to complete the taste.

Belutak

My 6-year old’s brain used to think this snakelike food was fine as long as this ‘snake’ tastes as beefy and sweet, just like real beef meat 😄 but actually, Belutak is made up of salted minced meat stuffed into casings of cow’s or buffalo’s small intestines.

In Brunei, they sell it in a clear packet in the supermarket or personal vendor and the price ranges from BND6 to BND10 depending on the weight of the product. I love to buy it from Perindustrian Beribi which cost the cheapest and stir-fried it with onion and a pinch of salt. I can make 4 portions from just one whole roll. But don’t expect me to share it with you because it’s so so so delicious, although the look isn’t that appealing.

Daging Urat Tumis Aminah Arif

It’s trimming of the beef cooked with soy sauce and turmeric and other ingredients that no one can copy no matter how many recipes you can find out there that claimed it’s Aminah Arif’s real recipe. It’s already their signature dish along with their main dish, Ambuyat that is solely served here. One dish cost BND4 and it’s for two persons serving. If you order in a set with Ambuyat I think it’ll cost you much cheaper. A whole set of Ambuyat full package (if I can remember) comprises of Ambuyat, Daging Urat Tumis, choice of cooked veggies, Ulam-ulaman, the Ambuyat dipping sauce, Belutak, and cooked fish. You can watch my vlog below for a better view of it.

So have you ever tried any Bruneian delicacies?

Review: Peripera Ink Velvet AD

So it’s date night.
What do you hope will last until the very end of the night?

 For me, it’s my lipstick.

I’m very conscious whether it still on my lips. I don’t know if you have a habit to Go to the restroom and pretend that you take a leak but actually you want to touch up your makeup and fix everything especially your fading lipstick. I sometimes do that. Heck, I’ve been doing it even though I have a date with my husband. I still want to look decent in front of him because it’s a special night and we didn’t do this very often. Well, from what I remember this is the first time of our 5 years marriage, I felt at ease; not thinking too much about my daughter and stress-free while dining out with my husband. I was thankful that my mother-in-law gave us a chance to have our special night while she looked after my daughter. So yes, I put that aside from my mind for a few hours and spent the moment with my husband.

I had a great dinner last Sunday night and this happened.

Our date night 28.06.20

My lipstick was gone. One of the pet peeves that always happened to me; maybe to all of you that’s not applying a long-lasting lipstick.

I wanted to do fix this photo with my very handy app, Makeup Plus but what stopped me from that was there was a question popped into my head at that time ”wheres the originality of the day you cherished if you tweak this picture?

I sighed many times looking at this picture and reminded myself that I will use my other lip tint I bought the other day.

It’s Peripera Ink Velvet AD.

Behind the story

Back in November last year, I was into watching mukbang on Youtube and I was stumbled into this one Korean lady that eats a lot. She has this lipstick that won’t fade whenever she eats. It made me want to buy that kind of lipstick and how desperate I was at that time? I private messaged her on Instagram. It took me like a month or so to get a reply from her. It’s this lip tint and I straight away ordered it.

THE REVIEW

Package quality

It came with a box. At first when I saw this cute tiny bottle I thought does it has a dropper like all the serums have or it is just made like that? I mean, if the applicator is like a dropper I couldn’t imagine how I use this lip tint if I bought it. So I read its info and found out that the applicator looks like any lip tint applicator that I had before. You need to twist the dropper-like-cap to open it and I appreciate that the tiny bottle is made of glass.

Performance

When I applied this on my lips, I could feel the texture a little thick but wasn’t too thick that it wouldn’t glide on the lips. I could smell the cherry scent and it didn’t overwhelm me so that’s a plus point.

The color? It made me gasp when I first dabbed it on my lips. It looks crayon-y and I was afraid that it’d turned out neon-y when I wear it. However, as I smacked my lips to make the tint spread evenly, I was surprised that the shade looks natural and immediately fall in love with the color.

How lasted it gets? I’m impressed with it but not too overly impressed. I think it depends on how you wear this lip tint. I’m sure the color would survives through the night maybe a little wear off, if you apply it fully. I like to apply at the center of lips, smack it, dabs again on the center of my lips and spread it to make it a gradations effect and look natural. Although I applied like that, I could see the tint was still there.

It gave me a matte finished and if you read my last review on other product, you already know that I have dry lips. This tint didn’t make my lips so dry after the wear. I could see the tint went into my lips creases but when you eat your food (perhaps, the meal I had last Monday was greasy)you wouldn’t see the creases effect after that. It isn’t too big deal since it isn’t that visible when you are standing in front of me. So that’s another plus point I gave to the product.

Product’s rate? 3.5/5

Would I purchase it?

Yes. This line came with 10 colors and I chose Sparkling Pink #09. It seems like this is the only pink color I see in the advert. I’m hoping that they have many shades of pink in this line. So next time, I would purchase another color in red just because of the performance and the color is so amazing. I’d like to display this on my vanity table and have fun playing with the colors 🙂

COPPA, Vlog Life & Kinemaster

I missed making videos about my daily life. I had tons of unedited videos in my handphone taken before and after I went back to my home country, Brunei. Ever since the FTC has this COPPA policy over Youtube last October it discouraged me to upload videos; too anxious about my previous content and what I am about to share to the world. The penalty is USD42K+. I hardly earning anything from my video nor having that amount of money. Hence, I took a break and make my mind focus more on other priorities.

After I fully understood the policy, I garnered some courage and continue to edit it. It took me only two days. I felt so much relief that I managed to get one video done last night.

I’m used to edit video with iMovie. But now, I think I fall in love with Kinemaster. It is more practical and I can save a lot of time with this app. I’m using the Pro plan so if you lovelies out there want to remove that annoying watermark completely when you export your videos, I highly recommend you to purchase that plan. It’s USD$39.90 annually. Believe me, it’s really worth it.
